Using wallpaper on a feature wall adds charm to the decor. With so many unique designs to choose from, you can easily find the perfect wallpaper for your space. However, installing wallpaper can sometimes be tricky and makes us think about is it really a DIY product. As you will find out that there are many issues that might come up when you are trying to spruce up the wall with wallpaper. Some of these issues could be:

Bubbles In The Paper

The appearance of bubbles is the most common problem while installing wallpaper.  There could be many reasons for the appearance of bubbles including:

  1. The extreme porosity of the wall surface.
  2. Incorrect surface preparation.
  3. Lack of relax time for the glue to soak in properly.
  4. Low temperature.

Better preparation of the wall is the best way to avoid bubble menace. However, even after all the cautious work, If you still see bubbles on your wallpaper, don’t worry too much. You can remove some of them by smoothening them out. For the rest, wait for the paste to dry and most of the bubbles will go away. For large bubbles, you can also try to squeeze in more paste.

As a final measure, if you see small bubbles, you can puncture them with a needle or cut them with a blade and repaste the flaps.

Over Trimming & Undertrimming

Over trimming is caused when the wallpaper has been trimmed too much, losing some of the patterns at the edge. Alternatively, under trimming is when not enough paper is trimmed at the edge. Be careful when you are preparing your wallpaper so that it is trimmed properly according to the wall. Also while trimming the wallpaper, ensure that the knife blade is sharp to avoid tears while trimming. Oversaturated wallpaper can tear easily.

Curls

This problem is caused when there is not enough glue on the edges of the wallpaper. Over rolling the wallpaper can cause the paste to squeeze out from the edges. Once the paste is applied to the wallpaper, the alignment of seams should be done promptly. Taking too much time in alignment can cause the paste around the edges to dry, leading to increase chances of occurring curls.

Curling and loose ends are also caused by high temperature of the room, causing the paste to dry quickly.  Wrong type of paste used can also lead to splotches in the paper. There are different types of paste such as heavy-duty clear paste, wheat paste, starch paste, vinyl over vinyl paste, etc. These pastes have different properties and are used for different kinds of wallpapers. Do read the wallpaper manufacturer guidelines before choosing your paste.

In case you face curling and loose end problem while installing wallpaper, special adhesives can be used to paste the open seams without preparing the whole wall.

Show Through

If your wall is in particularly bad shape, avoid using semi-transparent wall coverings. These coverings, if very thin, can cause the dark images on the wall due to patching to show through. The paint color of the wall can also be visible through the wallpaper in some cases. Also, visible brown spots on the wall can be caused by impurities in the plaster or by fungus growth due to damp and cold conditions.

To avoid the show-through problem, always paint or prime your wall using a pigmented wallcovering primer/sealer before applying wallpaper. This will also provide an even surface for the wallpaper. Where possible choose the paint color the same as the background of the wallpaper.

If a wall is not in a good shape and a semi-transparent wallcovering has to be used, choose lining paper wallcovering.

Streaking

The adhesive, if not applied properly, can get smeared across the wallpaper. Any adhesive on the surface of the paper will leave a repulsive mess on your walls. In the case of streaking, do not rub the paper too hard as it might damage the wallpaper or push it out of its place. Use warm water to remove any smears and clean them as soon as they appear.

Seam Problems

Staining at the Seams: When the old size on the wall is refreshed by the wallpaper paste, staining at the seams might be visible. To avoid the stains, wash down your walls with hot water to remove any old size. If the stains appear, wipe it with clean cloth or rag.

Gaps at the Seams: The gaps at the seams occur if the wallpaper paste isn’t strong enough to hold the paper, causing the paper to shrink when it dries. Hence, using the right type of adhesive is extremely important in wallpaper installation. There is no solution for hiding the gap other than painting it with the wallpaper’s matching color.

Sometimes if you are not careful enough while preparing the wall or applying the right paste, the paper might slowly fall off the wall. The most common causes of wallpaper falling off the wall are:

  1. Inadequate strength or quantity of the paste applied
  2. Incorrect sizing of the wall
  3. Not removing old distemper or gloss paint.
  4. Condensation forming in the walls.

If the problem is affecting only a small area, try reapplying fresh paste in the affected area. If the whole wall is affected, the wallpaper will have to be completely removed and replaced after curing the underlying cause.
