Preparing the surface:
3D wall panels are installed over smooth and even surfaces. However, they could be installed on any existing paint (including metallic paint) and wallpaper base as long as the wall is even. Before applying wall panels, the surface must be made clean and dry. Special attention should be given to any loose debris that might be present in the wall. Major holes or damage can interfere with the installation and therefore it must be repaired. In some cases, if the walls have glossy paint, you might need to dull the surface using sandpaper to make the bonding easier.
Installing Wall Panels:
Find out whether the installation will be a floating design, a strip of panels, or wall-to-wall. To find out the right installation pattern, you can draw grids on the wall or lay-out the panels on the floor. Compare the size of the wall to the size of the panel to estimate how many panels your wall might need. Alternatively, you can also check out InterioMasters wall panel calculator. Using a permanent adhesive:
For permanent installations in complex climatic conditions, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for adhesive use. For panels with a slight bow, flexing can help in flattening the panel. Panels that are not flat, especially around the edges, should not be used in the installation.
Cleaning up the panels:
Use a damp rag to wipe off mastic that is accumulated in the roller or panels during installation. You can also wipe the roller or panels while they are wet, just ensure that it does not affect the placement of the panels. Also, minimize the wiping on panels that are not primed. Excessive damp wiping of unprimed wall panels might cause the panels to muddle up some pulp. Finally, make sure that the panels are adjoined as closely to each other as possible.
Preparing the panels: Items required:
High Grit Sandpaper
Wallpaper Seam Roller
Adhesives– Polymer Adhesive
Placing the panels on the walls:
Before proceeding with placing the panels, plan your design well keeping in mind the desired results. Follow the steps for placing the 3D wall panels
The panels are to be placed on the wall in the same way, regardless of the adhesion method used.
Make sure that the panels that are installed in the beginning are placed as straight as possible. Use a level to ensure proper alignment. Also, look out for any wall damage or wall impurity at the outset to avoid any issues later on.
The panels should be placed next to each other, fitting closely to minimize the seams. To reduce cutting on a wall-to-wall install, try to work across the wall, starting from one corner and moving from the top. Keep in mind which panels need to be cut if you are starting from the center.
Cutting the panels:
Use a standard utility knife to cut the panels. To ensure a straight cut, make multiple passes on the panel, cutting deeper each time. After cutting, use sandpaper (350 grit) to sand out the edge.
If your wall is not completely straight, or if a panel is improperly cut, a panel block might be slightly out of position. You can rectify it with paintable caulk or joint compound. Seam issues are to be addressed before painting and after priming. Ensure that the right quantity of adhesive is used in the panels to provide excellent fixing of the panels. Allow proper dry time, and reapply if needed. Minimize wiping as much as possible on panels that have not been primed.
Applying primer and final sanding:
After fixing the panels and filling the seams, apply a light coat of sandable drywall primer/sealer. Once the primer dries, a quick, light and gentle sanding over the entire wall will ensure smoothening of the wall surface for painting. It will also remove any foreign debris on the wall.
The wall panels that could be painted are now set to be brushed, rolled or sprayed. Make sure to prime the panels first. To avoid oversaturation of panels, try to use multiple light misting coats instead of one heavy coat. To know more about the proper way of applying paint, refer to the manufacturer’s guidelines for the number of coats, dry times, and climatic and environmental conditions. You can also work with professional painters to help you obtain the desired effects.
